During the first weeks of October my large group counseling topic is, "Don't Call Me Names (or other "stuff" that bothers you)." It is important to discuss this topics with your children to reinfore that they know what to do if someone bothers them. If they learn this skill now, they will be more confident in handeling more difficult problems later. I presented and we practied the following steps:
Tell the person how you feel and ask them to stop.
Ignore the name-calling and pretend you don't hear it.
Speak up for a friend who is being called a name.
Talk to an adult. Tell the closes one to the situation first so they
can resolve it quickly. For example, if the problem occurs on
the bus tell the bus driver first to see if it can be resolved then.
Continue to talk with adult about the problem as needed.
To see if your child remember what to do, ask them the following questions:
What would you do if someone calls you a name?
Who could you ask for help?
