Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year

Summer is coming to an end and it is almost time to begin an new school year! Open house will be Thursday, July 31st from 1-6 p.m. We are so looking forward to seeing you!!! Ms. Bush and Mrs. Johnson will be selling C.E.S. t-shirts that day to raise funds for the "Student of the Week" program and "gotcha" parties.

Ms. Bush is the primary counselor for the second grade and half of the first grade classes. Mrs. Johnson is the primary counselor for kindergarten and half of the first grade classes. Your child's class will come to see us every other week to discuss social skills and character education. Although your child will have a primary counselor, we will both be working together to achieve greatness for all of our students. We see many students individually or in small groups to assist with specific needs. One of our tools is a contract designed to help a child reach a specific goal. Our first goal this year is a great first week of school.

There are some things you can do to help your child. First, get prepared. Please come to open house and meet your child's teacher. Bring materials from the school supply list that day. Communicate with the teacher about where and how to get them home. Let us know about your concern for your child's academic and social needs.

Second, get organized. Reestablish moring and evening routies and start them a week before school begins. Discuss choices for breakfast, clothing, snacks, lunches, after school care and transportation before the first day. Encourage reading and math this week to prepare their minds for school.

Third, stay positive. The first days of school are stressful and tiring. Stay calm!! Remind your child they will be learning new and exciting things. Keep your focus on things that your child likes about school. If your child gets upset, recognize the feeling and try to talk out the concern. On the first day of school keep your good bye brief and upbeat. You can stop by the councelor's office on the way out or call us later to check on how your child is doing.

Last, review the day. After the first day review what works well and what needs to be changed. Reward them for helping make the adjustment back to school. We want to have a smooth transition from summer activities to school schedule as quickly as possible. If your child experiences difficulty, talk with your child's teacher or counselor. We may be able to help. The school's number is 285-0273. We are looking forward to a great year with your child at Coosada Elementary School!!
